This allows individuals the flexibility to access counselling from wherever they feel most comfortable.

Adolescent

Counselling for adolescents with parents involved, often referred to as family counselling or family therapy, is a therapeutic approach that aims to address the emotional, behavioural, and interpersonal issues faced by adolescent while actively involving their parents or guardians in the treatment process. We work both one to one with the adolescent and may have sessions with one or both parents/guardians involved for part or whole sessions. This type of counselling recognises that family dynamics play a role in an adolescent’s development and well-being. Here is a description of counselling for adolescents with parents/guardians involved.

Assessment and Intake:- The counselling process typically begins with an initial assessment where the counsellor meets with the adolescent and their parents together or separately. During this phase, the counsellor gathers information about the family’s history, dynamics, and the specific concerns that have led to seeking counselling. The counsellor also assesses the adolescent’s individual needs and goals.

Establishing Trust:- Building trust and rapport with both the adolescent and their parents is essential. Adolescents may initially resist counselling, so it’s crucial for the counsellor to create a safe and non-judgemental environment where they can express themselves openly.

Identifying Issues:- Through open and empathetic communication, the counsellor helps the family identify the underlying issues and conflicts contributing to the adolescent’s challenges. These issues may include academic problems, substance abuse, mental health issues, communication breakdowns, or conflicts related to family rules and expectations.

Setting Goals:- The counsellor collaborates with the family to establish clear, achievable goals for counselling. These goals may be related to improving communication, resolving conflicts, addressing specific behavioural problems, or supporting the adolescent’s emotional well-being.

Teaching Communication Skills:- Effective communication is often a central focus of counselling. Adolescents and parents learn to express their thoughts and feelings more openly, listen actively to each other, and resolve conflicts in heathier ways. Improved communication can lead to better understanding and stronger connections within the family.

Parenting Skills and Education:- Parents receive guidance on effective parenting strategies, including setting boundaries, providing emotional support, and fostering independence in their adolescent. They may also gain insights into the unique challenges of adolescence and how to navigate them.

Conflict Resolution:- Adolescents and parents work together to identify and address specific conflicts or issues that have caused tension within the family. They learn conflict resolution techniques and problem-solving skills to manage disagreements constructively.

Emotional Support:- Adolescents are encouraged to express their emotions and thoughts in a safe and supportive environment. Parents are taught to validate their child’s feelings and provide emotional support during difficult times.

Monitoring Progress:- Throughout the counselling process, progress is continuously monitored. The counsellor assesses whether the established goals are being met and adjusts the treatment plan as needed. Regular check-in with both the adolescent and parents help track improvements and challenges.

Ending and Aftercare:- When the family has made significant progress and achieved their counselling goals , the counsellor helps prepare for the ending of therapy. Strategies for maintaining the progress achieved during counselling are discussed, and resources for ongoing support may be provided if necessary.

Counselling for adolescents with parents involved can be highly effective in addressing a wide range of issues that impact the family unit. It promotes healthier family dynamics, enhances communication, and provides adolescents with the support they need to navigate the challenges of adolescence successfully. This collaborative approach recognises that both the adolescent and their parents play crucial roles in the therapeutic process and the overall well-being of the family.
